Oh wow that is a wonderful (and morbid) explanation for stealing from fiends in that story. One of these days I'm going to read Clarion all the way through.

Yeah an unsent was the only type of fiend I could think of that takes human shape. There aren't any shapeshifters or legends of kitsune-like fiends that can disguise themselves in human form. The Al Bhed do a lot of exploring in remote locations too so they probably encounter more wayward souls than you would find in a city.

I have wondered about Al Bhed funeral customs. They don't seem to have summoners or sendings, and they don't visit the Guadosalam Farplane to see the memories of their dead. It's possible that they accept death more readily than other Spiran cultures, and so they're able to find their way to the Farplane on their own, but there are probably some who never make it there.

I would never have guessed that Brother and Al-Cid Margrace had the same voice actor until you told me a little while ago, but now I can't unhear it haha. Brother took awhile to grow on me too but I like him now. I still think his crush on Yuna is weird an inappropriate, though. But I once made a list of FFX ships ranked from Least to Most Messed Up and "First Cousins" (which also could include Yuna and Rikku) was actually near the bottom. (On the Least end of the scale.) Which does not say a lot for the rest of the ships, mind you.

My first guess was that the statue was some kind of Ronso deity from before they were converted to Yevon although I couldn't imagine why it was there. Then I started doing research and found the Shisa, and that it was from Okinawan mythology, so I thought that must have been it.

And nooo I like talking with you!
