Poor Waffles and his bad camping trips. To be fair, the inside of Baaj Temple is heavily insulated by all that stone, so it might be like stepping into a chilly cave after being outside in the heat and humidity.

Good catch on the Shisa statue! That is something I did not know, and it fits in with the rest of the Okinawan touches.

There is so much tucked away in the details of this game. I had wondered if that statue was a Guado deity from before they were converted to Yevon by Seymour's father, but perhaps instead it came from the pantheon/mythology of whatever group of people lived here before Baaj sank. Hey, maybe Baaj was the mysterious island of Cynical GrumpyAsses With Red Eyes and Black/Gray Hair and Goth Tastes in Clothing that we keep speculating about!

Which of course explains why Auron is hovering around there as a seagull. (LUNAR WHALE.)

I didn't know all that backstory about Baaj — from the Ultimanias, I'm guessing, as I've pumped a lot of npcs for scraps and don't recall that — and I am so pleased that you and Numbers have puzzled out more of the inscriptions! Mage lessons make sense for that "fire" scrawl, although I can just imagine Ms. Anima sending Seymour to bed without dessert after finding him scrawling graffiti all over the floor.

It hadn't occurred to me that the Al Bhed's "A fiend! In human form!" suggests that they think he's unsent, but that explains this puzzling exchange. Rikku seems confused about unsent later, when Yuna's guardians are puzzling over Jyscal's apparition, but maybe it's just that the Al Bhed call that kind of thing "fiend in human form" and have no notion of unsent, since they probably don't do sendings. (Which may mean more restless unsent in Al Bhed territory, eep.)

I'm guessing Brother and Rikku are sort of joint captains of this salvage ship because of being Cid's kids. With Rikku being like a lieutenant because she's the younger of the two. (I like HC's explanation for "Brother" as a title of a technomonk.)

I used to dislike Brother for being too darned shrill and a little bit perverted, but he does grow on you. (I still find it mindbending that Brother is the voice actor of Al Cid Margrace the Magnificent Ham / Antonio Banderas Parody in FFXII).

*peers at weird glowing orange sign* Oh, right, that one. I found a bootleg scan of FFX Ultimania Omega, which translates it as "Gate Coil N." Which doesn't make too much sense, except that perhaps this Troy VIIa (good analogy) was built something like Midgar with that looping corkscrew traintrack that goes around the central hub HEY WAIT A MINUTE another FFVII connection. (Not really, as I don't think the game designers came up with the tie-in until X-2.) But anyway, I think they were thinking of some kind of spiral-shaped layout, which pops up in several FFs. And there's another spiral in this spiral-obsessed game.

"I also love the outraged “!” that monsters get over their head when you steal from them" HA. Yes, the things one gets used to in gaming so that one stops noticing. (Personally I still crack up at the :) speech bubble above Basch's head, because Basch is almost never happy).

Pickpocketing the piranha's pockets: see Justira's Clarion with Braska trying to teach his wife's "steal" skill to Jecht. (Go here and then use Cntrl-F to search for the word "absorbed" in order to jump down to that scene). It's fascinating meta for silly game mechanics.

"Nooo Rikku don’t feed him. He’ll just keep coming back if you do." Aww, be nice to the stray. Loving all your "Tidus is such a doofus but we love him anyway" screencaps, and no I COULD NOT DO THAT.

Oh goodness I hadn't thought about the fact that Dad just butts in while he's talking to a girl. DAAAAAD.

Oh, well, luckily, there's someone on Besaid who is a Dog Person as well and will immediately feel he has to adopt the poor stray. Unfortunately, Lulu is a Mog Person and is Not Amused. But I'm getting ahead of myself, and should probably get back to Wall Market and the Shiny Golden Wire of Hope.

...I talk too much. Oops.
